WW barb using Shield .. worth it sometimes, or better 2H all the way?

[:1]Hi there, im getting closer to make the decision of what kind of weapons I will use on my barb (so raise weapon mastery accordly), and Im torn between Swords or Polearms.

Yes , I know u can reset skills whenever u get ur hands on a worthy weapon and raise mastery accordly, but already used up 1 reset for safety / leveling purpouses. Besides that, I enjoy more to have a definite goal / area of focus on my char and look foward it (just for playing mindset and fun).

So, my barb is the typical max Shout , BO , WW , Mastery. And Im seriously debating between the said swords or polearms for this 2 reasonings / advantages:

Polearms: I kinda like more the array of unique useful polearms from easily obtainable to fantastic useful (ex: bonehew , tombreaver). Also the range 4-5 for some nice runewords is handy

Sword: Lot less WIAS required for last BP (34), so more useful runewords available (Im thinking about Oath as the most of the elite 2H swords have 4sockets max, very nice chance to get an ethereal one just ready to use)

But the most important thing is with a 2H sword I can occasionally equip a shield (stormshield for example) if things get really nasty, for example with frenzytaurs, lister minions etc.

Well real question is, with a barb buffed with full shout defense and prolly some leftover points onto iron skin, have you struggled on any situation? (no pvp , UT not prolly at question aswell). If so, using shield with said so barb makes some / good difference, worth of using swords then? Preffer to know now before I end dead first time I come in front of Hell baall laughing at me

Sorry for the wall of text, just read this last paragraph above if you feel lazy, rest of post is redundant ... Thanks in advance fellow survivors|||Haven't played WW in a long, long time. Nowadays I play Frenzy but I don't see it as that much of a difference.

I play Hardcore so safety is very important to me. My barb is currently lvl 91(Not done a public run since lvl 85). Anyway I have max Shout, BO, Axe Spec and Frenzy(then one in all the goods and prereqs/synergies and the rest in Double Swing). I have 3900 hp when BO'ed 18k Armor with Shout and Defiance Merc. 75 Fire Res/15 Absorb, Cold Res 65 / 20 Absorb, 80 Light Res, 75 Poison Res. 2500-4200 dmg approximately

I rarely have trouble, only when I have to deal with phys immunes with many ranged or hardhitting enemies around or with hard hitting mobs with Conviction/Fanaticism aura. But I don't get bursted down instantly, but packs like Lord De Seis or Frenzytaurs with Fanaticism can really inflict some damage, same goes for any large elemental group with Conviction aura(When I see Conviction I generally avoid the group, unless I know it's weak or very small).

Having a fair bit of LL is really helpful as well when not wearing a shield.

If you play HC or simply hate dying, Howl is a really good skill, makes Lord De Seis pack pretty ineffective, just Howl the Doom Knights and kick Lord De Seis to the ground, without his aura they're nothing.

Getting by without a shield is definitely doable!|||I used to use a botd war pike barb. It was extremely fun and did sh*t ton of damage. Also it looks really cool. But to the point, you definitely do not need a shield. If a pack seems overwhelming I would always just ww in a line slightly away from the group. As long as you dont ww through the middle of the group and try to ww around the sides I've never had a problem.|||A bad roll of monsters can take away 4k life so freakin fast, even with a shield. If the monsters got amp/aura/extra strong and roll crits on you, it might well be game over|||Ok, then is settled, 2 Handed all the way ... if you have to die, do it in your own terms , and enjoy it (old barb saying).

Ty for responses guys, now I have clear I dont wanna use shield ( good to know to not pump dex) , but I just miss 1 mal rune to make that oath and is appealing me so much ... that im gonna try it out and make sword mastery no matter I have to respec after for the lovely polearms.

See you in the graveyard
