Well, Barbs have always been my favorite class and SC is boring these days. So I really want to make a barb for HC but obviously I'm not gonna have any decent gear. I plan on making a whirlwinder but honestly I just don't see how I am gonna survive for long untwinked.
Any tips? Should I look into crafting or other cube recipes for rares/etc. Just curious, and if there is a guide already for something like this point me in the right direction please. I did look but didn't see anything.
Thanks|||I would suggest you stay away from WW if your gear isn't that great. I at least have the tendency to WW into big packs, where i get into trouble.
Concentrate is better for survivability, if you can stand the extra time it takes to kill large packs.
Barb is a hard first character to make because they are so dependent on their weapon.... and I'm not sure there are many low level runewords that will help you out. Upgrading lower level uniques like bloodletter or butcher's pupil may help for a while (lum + pul + p emerald + exceptional unique weapon).|||Thanks for the reply. I know it will be difficult to start out with a melee class and no great runewords, but meh, I still want to give it a shot. Maybe I will go with concentrate (or perhaps frenzy?) first instead of going straight to wwing.
Yea there are a few great low uniques that I should be able to find along the way (even if it takes a few boss runs here and there). I have seen a few crafted zerkers that are really good though, perhaps not end-game, but still decent.
Honestly though, I have no idea about what would be the best skill/stat setup, etc...
Concentrate/Zerk/Frenzy max block/max vit sword/axe mastery|||zerk does better damage with mediocre weapons. one of its synergies (howl) is also very effective at crowd control. sure the build has its drawbacks including zero def (dont need it if it's running from you) and leech doesnt work (hey, you dont need to look for leech on gear!), but they're easily worked around.|||A barb was also my first char when I started recently but I got stuck in act 5 and started a sorc. Hopefully you'll do better :P
Imo DS (double swing) is by far the best skill to take you through normal or until you get a good weapon, the IAS boost can't be beaten. Unless you get a good rare/unique the pali scepters you buy in town filled with gems are effective for act 1-3, after that you'll have to hope something alright drops. For skills, put a couple of points into DS until it doesn't cost any mana, a couple into bash and mastery and spend the rest into shout and battle orders as you level up.
For later on I'd give WW a try. As long as you don't play too aggressively I'd say it's safer than conc.|||for starters get a strengh (tal amn) + malice (ith el eth) or an insight (insight in an elite weapon can serve as end gear very well). all the needed runes are easily obtained till the end of a5 norm with the new patch.
the chipped gem recipe (3 chipped + magic weapon in cube -> magic weapon with random affixes ilvl 25 and 1-2 soc) can produce some very nice things
those will get u through normal and nm easily. dont forget to put some hard points into natural resistance and u should be pretty safe.
blood craft helmets, rings, gloves and belts will be ur friend in nm and early hell u can try to craft ur 500 ed zerker axe, but i wouldnt bother...
if a bonesnap drops, that works wonders too, specially if upgradede once or twice|||Again, thanks for all the replies. I hadn't had a chance to read over most of the lower level runewords in quite sometime, but there are some pretty nice ones thrown in there. strength + malice seems like a good start, very easy to find runes. I was also planning on doing quite a bit of the blood crafting.
Makes things quite a bit easier and easier to adapt in earlier levels knowing I can respec later on if needed. Looking forward to the challenge of HC.
