Are you really that 'on edge'?

While browsing around the web of Diablo 2 sites and their various strategy sections I notice a lot people suggesting that Hardcore revolves around this strained, constant hovering over the 'Juves, panic mod type of play and so far as I have been playing, this is hardly the case at all.

I've found numerous entries of folks telling the tale of "one wrong step and deeds" and an infinity of grief that follows. This also has never rang true.

If anything, I've laughed at nearly all of my deeds, because they were either stupid things like running my level 16 sorceress into a cow crowd or my necro being beaten to death by monsters that certainly *seemed* to be just his revives.

Is there a general glorification of Hardcore play, or am I just a supremely jaded veteran?|||Wait til you have a valuable higher level character in challenging areas |||Yup it's true, if you've not soiled yourself when running as a level 85 summoner when a single might enhanced skellie comes running straight at you with shocking speed and apparent evil intent, then you don't know hardcore. |||Im never in much of a panic mode and usually wait until the last minute to pot. I usually have 2 of my cd keys logged on though so I have Bo and a very stable cable internet connection. In the case where I do feel threatened with lagg or an incredibly challenging monster I simply TP to town and regroup. The game has been made even easier now with the removal of Iron maiden in the Wsk and Chaos so farming for items is much easier fro every build type...|||MYK, it's the internet... That place where people actually take the time to inform the world they just took a crap and had to wipe their cornhole two extra times because yesterday's chili beans produced some particularly sticky faecal matter.

Internet = the glorification of exaggeration.

Having said that most of my toons die the moment I start loosing the "Careful now, you're a fragile little grasshopper" feeling...|||oOmpie I think I collapsed a lung laughing at that!|||Quote:

I would have a hard time believing that you're ever in panic mode, Dave.

Point hilariously made, oOmpie!|||In HC every single second is an intense one.

In Softcore there is not a single intense second in the game.

Which would you choose?

Softcore gets boring real quick for me after playing HC. It's like the thrill is gone.|||To be honest I very rarely felt the "adrenaline rush" of playing hardcore. Very, very rarely there would be instances where my HP would drop like a rock and I'd mash my juvs in a panic but they were few and far between. This is probably because I am just a cautious person by nature and never allow myself to get into a situation which would lead to panic. Even when I'm just playing softcore I remain fairly diligent because while death is not final, losing exp and money is still frustrating enough IMO.
