i am scared!

Hello hardcore players...

just recently i started a new paladin on the EU HC ladder... but i am so scared! i dont want to die! i am building an avenger (i know not the best solo class but its pretty safe if you ask me) i have no points wasted yet... going fully untwinked means i have to stand by my self and going for max resists seemed a good idea in that case!

Are there any other hints you guys can give me? Before i end up as a level 17 ghost figure?

BKC|||99% of what will kill you is:

1) dolls (they always explode on death and deal dmg based on HP, so careful with 8 player games). act 3 durance lvl 2 norm nm hell, act 5 throne room nm hell.

2) iron maiden if ur melee. act 4 and act 5 lvl 3 WS K.

3) tppk|||Imho I'd ditch the whole Avenger idea for an untwinked char and go for a Zealer if you wanna do the pally thing. I tried an untwinked avenger once and it was SUPER slow going.

Frost Zealer is ideal for safety imho, but will slow down considerably once you hit Hell mode. But to get him going just get something with some crushing blow (crushflange will get you to hell mode easily) and start whacking the moles. Bit of salvation and you're gonna be alright. IM is a no brainer because of the low dmg on the flange, Salvation will get you through the nasty gloam moments. Imho the only real dangers are FE/LE or FE/CE dudes.

Just my $0.02 though.|||a zealer was my original thought... but i was scared i would IM/zeal myself to pieces which i didnt want to happen!

A cold sorc could be a good idea if goign untwicked since you can do lots of damage once you are level 18.|||You are expected to be scared. Death lies anywhere in HC! Especially those darn TPPK-ers ...|||but those tppk'ers will not enter my game i play only passworded games

i am going to stick with the avenger idea it might not be the strongest of the builds but it certainly is viable enough to clear the whole game (slow maybe, but steady!)

Yeah, to live is to die.

Level up without a rush. Some super uniques and act bosses deal lots of damage, especially if your level is too low.

Why bothering being in Battle.Net then?! You can do that in Single Player as well ... HC wouldn't be HC without the Thrill! I love the game of Cat and Mouse and vice versa!

Most unique untwinked build? ... viable too

We all know about fishy necs and meteorbs... what about some other builds that are pretty good untwinked and viable? I've been getting really bored lately with the same old builds and I want something challenging yet productive. I know that might not be possible but any creative ideas you guys give i'll probably try. and remember... i usually start characters untwinked.

I would recommend a pheonix striker assassin. I played one in 1.09 to lv 99 and I also have one now who is currently lv 81. I heard that they don't kill that well in hell games with a lot of characters, so I decided to remake mine. And she kicks ***! (I have an infinity on my merc though).

I think if you played one untwinked you would have fun and it would be challenging. I mainly like them because there are so many spells going on when you fight. Also, you have burst of speed which will help you get a fast attack speed or there is also fade which provides phys dmg redux as well as tons of resists.|||i've been playing this game for a while and have yet to get an assassin past lvl 20. maybe with some more focus i'll try that build. phnx strike looks interesting too...|||Hydra sorc with Orb or Lightning as backup for fire immunes.

-hps|||No doubt about it, solo plying through the game on a Static Enchantress is the way to go. In the immortal words of monster truck voice over guy "you'll pay for the whole seat but you'll only need the edge..."

Seriously though, few things get the blood pumping like running circles around half-life Blood Lords in hell while your level 12 unsynergized Hydra pecks at them... It can be pretty viable if you plan for solo play, but that's no fun. Go for a purely support build and solo with it.

Or if not, I'd suggest a Dim Vision/Confuse/Attract Poison Dagger Necromancer. I beat Hell with one last year and aside from the tedium it was quite a hoot. Other fun options include a Convertadin (can be really funny with the Cloak of Shadows charges from Nadir) or a Hydra/Thunderstorm hybrid. The hybrid is a delicate build, relying heavily on a Holy Freeze mercenary and GSpike/Ice Blast/FNova spam to keep your targets relatively stationary. Not as powerful as your classic FWall/Cold Sorceress but gives you a perverse sense of accomplishment. The skill points are tight and the playstyle takes a bit of getting used to as well.

Hmmm.... healer paladin, what about UNhealer and let merc kill.

Unhealers:

Assasin with bow or Necro with bow are both nice.

Try to get poison/monster cannot heal/open wounds for your char. Edge is good enough bow. Venom has too short duration, so don't use that.

Use max corpse explosion/death sentry kill groups.

Max gumby or max shadow mastery for tank.

Use rogue merc (wws, harmony, edge etc...) to help killing the first one.

Kuko is nice option too for both chars, but edge is much easier for untwinked.

For bosses, use resist shield and any crushing blow weapon, even strength runeword (amn tir).



Edge 3 Socket Missile Weapons (Tir + Tal + Amn)

+35% Increased Attack Speed

+320-380% Damage To Demons (varies)

Both poison and prevent monster heal, so its good start. Shoot same monster as you merc, you prevent monster to heal, rogue is your main killer.



Angelic ring+amu, Hsaru's boots+belt or Sigon helmet+gloves are all nice for ar boost. Even without those, you change to hit is good enough for unhealing purpose.

HC Barb Tank: main attack?

Hi All,

I've reloaded D2 on my new PC and am casually dipping into HC while waiting for the patch. I'll be playing a barb with two other friends (they will be a summoning nec and a LF javazon).

This will be UNTWINKED and I'd like to be a decent tank, while still being able to kill some stuff on my own should I need to. What should I build? Conc? WW? Berserk?

Also, any other advice for barbs in HC? I typically never play barbs except for singers. Thanks in advance for your advice/opinions.



-f|||Personally I am a big fan of concentrate. The only problem you will really have is finding a good weapon for damage, and AR. AR issues are solved by angelics combo (Ring + amulet), and those can be farmed from normal meph easily.

As for the weapon, in the later levels an eth oath scourge or balrog blade is always a good choice. ^^|||Frenzy is a good tank. High speed + high leech works very well. Make liberal use of War Cry and Battle Cry.|||Thanks for your replies so far. I like frenzy (fun skill!) but am kind of worried about survival in hell without a shield - seems more reliant on good gear. And what about when you run into unleechable enemies (e.g. skeles)? Since this is untwinked, I don't see it as a good tank build. Maybe i'm way off base though.

Concentrate looks cool - I've read that it's good, and I've also read that it's slow as hell and a bore to play. Might be good enough with the necromancer's amp dmg though.

No votes for sword/shield whirlwind? is that too dangerous in HC play?

Thoughts?|||Sword Shield ww only effect with super good runeword like breath of dying or last wish. Other wise in hell you just suck.

Then again you need a melee weapon that is extremely good.

I have a lance ww barb and that requires exceptionally great gear plus charms to do very well.

But basically common since would suggest the following fora barb

Max weapon mastery

max main attack--- ww, con, beskerk, frenz

max shout

max Battle orders

enough dex for max block if going shield so 150 base dex

strength enough for gear, since untwicked its probable that you will do 100 hard points into strength.|||Whirlwind or War cry. the latter being probably the best "tank" but the former offering far better killing speeds.

HC Hammerdin

I've just recentely started playing d2 again, and i've rolled up some hammerdins. Problem is, I've now lost two of them. I searched through quite a few guides, and while they provide a good summary of gear choices and how to spend talent/character points, they don't really give a good idea of how to play the hammerdin.

My question is this: Am I more like a caster utilizing hit and run tactics with my hammers? Or can I be a decent tank, and stand right up in the middle of things?

That again is a question of Gear.

I usally lure my enemies into my hammer field.... and when meet by ranged enemies charge up to em and begin hammering. I usually have a Holy Freeze merc.. though a prayer merc /w insight is perfectly viable.

I prefer Holy Freeze when I don't have good gear though.

Holy freeze allows me to tank abit and is a great help by slowing enemies down. Allows you to react when the Cursed Fast Ghosts come flying down over ya.

1pt both redemption and salvation, for saftey and Corpse removal + mana.

I go for max block... usually try to put a few points into HS either by raw skill points OR scepter on switch. Both are viable. But max block is Vital for surival, and the defense bonus doesn't hurt either.

You don't need alot into STR.. so go for the standard max block rest vitae route.|||Quote:

I'm no hammeradin expert, so if someone comes and contradicts me, you should listen to them.... but

You have no leech, so imo, you're a caster. You have to get in the middle of things to put up a hammer field, but if it gets thick, you'd better have an escape route.

A really good tank would leech more life back faster if lots of monsters showed up... you will not.

-hps|||I agree with everything Rawness has said, no need to repeat it. The key is knowing which monsters you can tank safely, and which ones to treat more carefully: dolls, vipers (anything with charge really, it applies to Pindleskin and friends too), specials with dangerous mods and the like... letting your merc do the tanking for you is generally a good idea, the few hammerdins I've lost it's been because of rushing ahead of the merc and meeting something I couldn't quite handle by myself, having patience is key to surviving. I edited it in|||I could be mistaken but I think the knights in the river of flame do not cast curses, they just throw elemental attacks at you and cast bone armor. I think only the oblivian knights in Chaos Sanctuary and in World stone keep lvl 3 and throne of destruction cast curses/ iron maiden?|||Oblivion Knights also spawn in the Infernal Pit - Act 5 Hell. Not sure about Nightmare, but that place is easily avoided..

As far as where OKs spawn, you're right.

You'd be incorrect about where you can have IM casted on you. There's been a few deeds of people thinking they're okay swinging away outside of the Chaos Sanctum...

That's because they are a crossbreed dude; a caster and warrior...maybe I should go get the acual name of them...

You're fine there dude, as GibItam said, they won't IM you, just projectile magic and Bone Shield and hit you with a sword when you get into melee range...near the door to the Chaos Sanc let the merc wander in first as Oblivion Knights tend to hide just inside the door

City and Plains is IM-free and 0% of IM Act's 1-3, yes

Thats one of the red portal side dungeon places...in the Frozen Tundra iirc...

Life sometimes Sucks !!

I dont want to sound all negative but I cant wait till Im chaising daisies and dont have to worry about LIFE in general anymore.

This past week has totally sucked for me so Im gonna rant a bit why.

I had a Dr appointment with a dermatologist about a week ago because I had a Mole on my back that was looking funky. I went in and they cut it off and did a biopsy that came back pre-cancerous. I was about scared ****less at that word and was thinking about it all week. One week later I went back and they cut a 1"x1" chunk of meat out of my back yesterday and Im awaiting word on the results.And my ****ing back is throbbing and Im pissed off about that tooo !!

As if that wasnt bad enough, I had a meeting this morning at work where they officially gave us the layoff notice thats going to happen in June - July next year. We are going from 40 people to 16 and Im 5 from the bottom so Im sure Im long gone from this job. Im hoping I can use my Union rights to bid into another job somewhere in Verizon as I really dont want to waste 11 years of senority I've accumilated over the past few years ...

My Herbalife business is taking me into debts that I really dont want to be in and Im having second thoughts on that too now..



If the COWBOYS lose to Denver Sunday Im gonna break the **** out of something and I can guarantee that .... Life Sucks sometimes and I need some hills to ride my bike in so I can forget about life for a bit.

Vacation for me starts next Friday and I cant F'ing wait !!



|||Yes it does sometimes. Still, you are pretty well off in some ways. You aren't under a collapsed building, you aren't swept to sea, never be seen again. That pre-cancerous mole was just that, not full blown C. You will get over the owie, cemo is much worse. I'm watching someone go through this right now.

I went through my dad's suicide and 11 year old daughter's death in two successive years (88 & 89). When my daughter died my wife's seizure disorder hit full blown (she had a seizure standing over the coffin). The next couple of years her health went into a spiral. But she finally got better and had about 5 really good years. Things were looking pretty damn good. Then my company closed the plant I was working in and said I had to move to Florida (from Indiana) to keep my job. Moved to Florida and my wife's health hit another spiral that she never came out of and she died in 2003. I'll tell ya life really, really sucked just about then.

Met my 2nd wife in Jan 2007, we got married in Aug that year and I've (we've) been deleriously happy ever since. I feel like I won the wife lottery.

So sometimes ya just gotta ride it out and have faith that less suckage is waiting for you, because it is!|||I admire all 3 of you... just for keeping on keeping on. Far too many people these days, when faced with adversity (particularly the very serious issues that you have all documented), just collapse into self-pity. All it accomplishes is hurting both yourselves and those who love you.

Don't let that happen to you. There is a purpose to life out there, somewhere, and it's up to you to find it. May the rest of your days be easier than those which have come before.

@Dave: Don't worry too much, I suspect you will be fine. Scary ****, but you're a pretty tough battle axe, and if you do get laid off, I'm sure there will be another job for you somewhere. Plus, if you aren't working, there will be more time for video games and sex... (I know, that probably wasn't an appropriate joke).

@Zappa: I had no idea... you already had my respect, but now you have more.

My mom suffered a pretty serious back problem a few years ago, and basically spent 2 years laying on the couch crying from pain. The first 6-8 months of that was spent trying to convince the doctors that there was actually something wrong. It was horrible to watch someone so good at heart go through something so horrible. Life certainly isn't fair... I think the reward is that after the hard times, everything else seems much better, much more rewarding. The most basic of things, that you took for granted before, are just great! So press through!

I'm not sure if it's my place to tell this, but I think he'll be fine with it. For those who don't know. Shaharris recently got clobbered by a car while riding his motorcycle. Sounds like he hit his head pretty hard (nothing serious lost there!)

I'm glad he's OK! The DIII.net community is having far to many NDE's for my liking.

Im Hammered pretty good about now and readng the forums. Thanks for the kind words all and Im not totally done just yet. I had a case of melanoma which is a form of skin cancer that when detected early, is easily treated. I had a nice chunk of my back removed and hopefully Im done with it after that.

It's been 7yrs since I tossed D2 from my life. I'm back again and quite esteemed might I add. Came straight to my home, hc, in order to play how it's meant but already stumbled on a PKer and lost my sorc, aye.

As if thats not enough I tried registering for dii.net again under my new account name, which is Viginity[Tr3s] and got banned because of in improper use of a name. Shamefully I see where they're coming from but it's actually latin for 23 and I had explained this to the webmaster in hopes to get the ban lifted so I could use my B.Net account name with the forums.

In any case, i'm fresh blood, with nothing and no one, coming back to the world of D thanks to a computer I got for college. I'm looking to socialize and meet people like it used to be. I actually used to roll with the Misfits in the Isle if anybody remembers those days. Not sure who's around or who's new anymore.

Since I've just started earlier this week, my highest character is the summonacer at level 75 now. I've started this game from the beggining of act 1 and did quests up to Act 2 now. I could offer my highest rune available from NM forge, which is a LUM. I know the rune is not high so I'm also willing to give All the perfect gems I have at this point (About 25-30). In addition, a valuable +3Max/+18AR small charm I've found and currently stored on my mule will be givn away as well.

As for the result of the Anni - It's a 13-17-10 Anni! Exactly what I'm looking for a high resist and perfect 10 exp! This should greatly help me survive better and level faster in HC environment.|||And this is why I love the D2 HC forum. It's nice to see folks who don't suck, offering help!

WoW is smelly. I'm playing an online Settlers of Catan knockoff. It doesn't have cartoon graphics.

Does a Standard of Heroes do anything? Does it have any value? The once time that I kill the Ubers I left them lay and only picked up the charm. 1) Has a level requirement of 90.



1)Turns into a flag or "standard" when you drop it on the ground.



2) Takes up one space in inventory.



3) Causes seemingly endless speculation and rumors.



Becuase it has a level requirement of 90 I personally believe it will do SOMETHING in a future patch. Right now it does nothing but what I've posted above. Anybody else want to kill a lvl 90+ character to find out if he's right, go ahead.

I tried dying on a lvl 96 sorc with SOH on, I seemed to lose quite a bit of exp... |||In my opinion the SOH does just as much as the chat gem in the channels... it works perfectly.

Strange/Fun Builds!

Unfortunetly im getting bored of D2, since i love Action-RPGs i have tried a few other games like Sacred, Divine Divinity and Restricted Area (i've even gone back to D1 a few times) but noone of the games are as fun as D2.

Most often its the character development that sucks in other games, i love the skilltrees in D2 and its by far the most rewarding char-development system ever created.

I recently threw away my enigma, cta, hoto, faith and some other godly stuff i got for free from some dude in order to make the game more fun again.

Anyway, enough ranting, im looking for your favorite unusual/fun builds. No cookiecutters. The stranger the better!

I will start a fresh account without any items and my first char will probably be the Daggermancer http://strategy.diabloii.net/news.php?id=582|||It might take a little bit of your time, but the other forums here have quite a few guides for strange builds that actually work.

As for the Daggermancer, I haven't read that particular guide but I'd recommend using a 'Treachery' armor if at all possible. The way poison damages combine, the chance to cast Venom from the runeword makes your Poison Dagger damage rather ridiculous.|||Quote:

I should add that im mainly looking for builds that require a bit of skill to play. Daggermancer seems fun because you need to use your crowd-control curses alot and use some advanced tactics. Anything that will add more of a challenge and strategy to the game.|||Try an untwinked 2 handed berzerker.|||I thought people would be more intressted in a thread like this, come on people! :smiley:

Anyway, thanks for the tip Dahkar i'll look into it after i guardian my Daggermancer.

He is lvl 30 right now and in act5. I would recommend this build to everyone who is bored of d2 and want a new experience. Right now im relying heavily on Dim Vision and Confuse together with Posion Explosion. My dagger (Kris sockted with 2 Perf Emeralds) together with lvl 19 Posion Dagger does 1.5k damage. Its alot of fun to see the life being drained from the enemy.

I can't wait until late NM when things get harder and i have to plan my attacks carefully. I also like the advanced system behind how poison works, you really need to read through that part of the guide carefully and also "The tao of poison"-guide.

The daggermancer is also rather easy to play untwinked, when you max the three posion skills your dagger will do 4860-5231 damage over 9.6 seconds and the posion explosion will do 8190-9870 damage over 9.6 seconds! Trang gloves will increase this with 25%! With some +skill items and a good poison dagger i think he can solo hell.|||... and the slvl 15 Venom from 'Treachery' will increase that fully synergized slvl 20 Poison Dagger to 12,687-13,571 poison damage over 10 seconds. Talk about a poor man's 'Bramble'...|||So what would mid/end game gear look like for such a necromancer? Rediculous runewords aside.

Full trang set would work well, gloves gives +25% poison damage, and the shield will give the enemies -25% Posion Resistance if you wear 3 items. You will also get lvl 18 fire wall which will help againt PIs.

The whole set will cost you an Um-rune. If you are poor though you can use the items i list below, the Trang gloves is a MUST though.

Helm:

Blackhorn's Face is good when you face alot of lightning enemies.

Peasant Crown

Wormskull

3S with Ral+Ort+Tal

Lore

Rockstopper

Armor:

Smoke

Lionhearth if you can afford it

Vipermagi

Spirit Shroud can be used in act5 normal but in NM you probably need some resist.

Duriel's Shell is nice, but a bit expensive.

Weapon:

3S with 3 Tal-Runes or Perf Emeralds depending on your needs, look at how the poison works in the guide.

Blackbog's Sharp this one is extremely cheap and godly for a psn nec.

Shield:

Any head with +posion dagger or explosion

Ancient Pledge

Radament's Sphere

Boots:

Sanders rip rap

Sandstorm Trek

Rare with resist

Waterwalk

Tearhunch

Rings:

Coral/Garnet/Cobal/Jade rings, depending on what res you lack. You can make the rings using the cube.

Ravenfrost is always nice

+3 bone/poison skills

+2 necro skills

Gloves:

Trang gloves

Belt:

Snakecord

of the Whale

Rare with res and life

I will probably make myself a threachery armor when i got the runes, its rather easy to make and the posion damage will as you said be extreme But in hell you will probably need an armor with alot of res in order to survive. Your life will not be great when you play a daggermancer and you dont have alot of minions to hide behind.|||The Fade on 'Treachery' gives 15% DR and 60% all res; all you gotta do is stand in some fire for a bit first.|||Quote:
